WAIKIKI COMMUNITY CENTER’S 2007
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AND MAKANA OLA LOA
AWARDS
Waikiki
Community Center kicked off its 30th anniversary at the
Annual Membership
Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held Thursday, March 13,
2008 at Waikiki Hilton Prince Kuhio Hotel. Barbie
Paris, a
long time member, volunteer instructor, and one of the founders of
WCC’s “Steptaculars” was recognized as the 2007 Volunteer of the
Year.
Congrats!
The
Makana Ola Loa Award was awarded to DFS
Hawaii for
their “WCC Extreme Makeover Project” and supporting WCC throughout
the years. In 2007,
over 100 DFS associates and management team gave WCC a complete
“makeover”—new coat of paint, new lanai furniture, EEC sinks, new
cabinets, classroom furniture, floor tiles in 5 classrooms,
carpeting, redesign of the WCC auditorium, and purchase school
supplies and equipment valued at over $100,000. DFS Hawaii has also assisted
at our Na Mea Makamae o Waikiki.
WCC
volunteers and board members were also acknowledged for their past
and continued support of the mission of Waikiki Community
Center. 125 people
attended this momentous occasion and helped celebrate our 30th

P.F. Chang’s Waikiki Grand Opening
to
Benefit WCCThursday,
April 24th, 5-10pm, $75 all inclusive
P.F.
Chang’s Waikiki located at the Royal Hawaiian Center has selected
WCC as their beneficiary for their Grand Opening Celebration on
Thursday, April 24, 5-10pm and everyone is
invited!
Tickets
are $75 per person and include a full dining experience with
signature dishes customized for each table. Reservations will be taken
for parties of 2-6 and includes dinner, 2 alcoholic beverages
(beer/wine), soft drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert, all
served in the traditional P.F. Chang family style.
Specialty cocktails will be served throughout the
evening. Parking is
$2/2 hours.

Dawn
Ward
is Waikiki Community Center’s nominee for the Mayor’s 42nd
Senior Recognition Program. Since becoming a member
of the Center about ten
years ago, Dawn has put in thousands of hours of
volunteer work. Some of
her more recent volunteer activities include lei making at the
Outrigger Hotel, hosting our New Member Coffee Hour, providing hotel
wedding escorts for couples, serving on the WCC Seniors Advisory
Committee, assisting at special events & helps to process our
mailings and newsletters.
She
also donates gifts for our functions and items for our office. Some of the events she
participates in are Sit and Stitch, Scrabble. Lunch Bunches,
excursions & special presentations. We
are pleased to honor Dawn for this special recognition & would
like to thank her for supporting WCC over the years. Congratulations

COMPLETE
LIFE SERIES WITH
SARAH ROBINSON
Sarah
Robinson, a
volunteer with Funeral Consumers Alliance Hawaii, will
be leading the “Complete
Life Series”. Developed
by the University of Hawaii’s Center on Aging, the Complete Life Series is designed to
answer questions about end of life issues, death care, and bereavement. Participants will receive a
booklet and handouts to serve as a resource for future use.
These series will be held on the 4th Wednesday of each
month on April 16 to August 20 with an end of series discussion on
August 27, 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the WCC Auditorium. Participation is free, and
we ask you to attend all 5 sessions. On August 27th, Sarah will
present a graduation certificate and refreshments will be served
only to those who have completed all five courses.

CONVERTING TO DIGITAL TV
April
23 (Wed.).—Converting to Digital TV. Beginning in Feb. 2009
anyone who does not own a digital set and receives programming over
the air antennas will no longer receive a picture. Ryan
Hagiwara from
FCC will provide information on the transition and share
resources.

VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK

Hawaii Hotel Lodging Association ~ Saturday,
May 17, 2008, 6am, McCoy Pavilion
Join the WCC team and participate in
the 30th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk scheduled May 17, 2008. Warm up and registration
begins at 6am, with the race starting at 7 am. The 6-mile walk starts at
McCoy Pavilion and includes 16 industry-sponsored checkpoints
throughout Waikiki, along the Ala Wai Canal, to the new Waikiki
Beach Walk and ends at Ala Moana Beach Park. Cost is $35 (minimum)
donation per adult, you can collect pledges and raise additional
funds. WCC is a
beneficiary of this fun community event and is forming a team of WCC
members. Pick up your
walk forms at WCC office and be sure to indicate you are on the
Waikiki Community Center team so we can get credit. Collect your pledges and/or
pay the $35 walk fee and receive a WCC shirt to wear while walking
(while supplies last).

QUILTS BY PATRICIA

Meet
and hear Waikiki resident, Patricia
Gorelangton
share her quilt displays and history of the Hawaiian quilt. Six of the 50 different
quilts she’s completed will be shared and on display. The Hawaiian quilts she’s
made are now owned by her family. She will have a new quilt
finished for this presentation.
Learn
more about the history of Hawaiian quilts and how Hawaiian women in
the 1820’s created and designed their own style of quilting. Register to attend this free

LANGUAGE & CULTURE 101

Palakiko
Yagodich returns
to WCC each Friday for Hawaiian Language & Culture 101 class
starting on Friday, March 7th, 11:30am-12:30pm. He will continue where
he left off with the pronunciation, grammar, and the usage of “Olelo
Hawai’i.” Member’s fee
is $25 for the 10 week session or $5 per class. Non member fee is $40 or $7

WCC
MEMBERS INTERESTED IN LAS VEGAS TRIP?
Those
interested in forming a WCC travel group to Las Vegas please let
Jeff know by calling (808) 923-1802. Four or five night packages,
includes airfare, hotel, transfers, baggage handling and all
meals. Trip to Laughlin with optional concert show. Will
need 12 paid guests to coordinate. Tentative travel date is
June 2008.
