WCC VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

AND MAKANA OLA AWARDEES

Waikiki Community Center is proud to announce our annual Volunteer and Makana Ola Awardees honored at our Annual Meeting and Volunteer Luncheon held on March 9, 2011 at the Hale Koa Hotel.   100 volunteers, guests, board members and staff attended this special event.

2011 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR:       John Signor

2011 MAKANA OLA AWARDEES:

Jefferson, Waikiki and Ala Wai Elementary Schools

For the past six years, Waikiki Community Center has developed a close relationship with three neighboring schools.  Our “good neighbors” have put on an annual Canned Food Drive by their Student Council, student body, staff and teachers to support our Emergency Food Pantry.   Over the years, they have donated over 3,600  pounds of canned food items during the holiday season allowing us to provide needed food and canned goods to those in need.

Accepting the awards were:  1) Mr. Stuart Kim, Principal and Mr. Jarrett Makaimoku, Student Counselor at Ala Wai Elementary School.  2)  Ms. Dolly Bahn, P.C.N.C. and Ms. Victoria Hahn, Student Council President 6th grade class at Waikiki School and; 3) Mr. Scott Parker, Principal at Jefferson Elementary School.

Congratulations to John Signor, our Annual Volunteer of the Year!  John Signor first arrived in Hawai` while he was in the Army on a troop ship sometime in 1948.  He met and married his lovely wife, Flor, soon after his arrival and she’s still with him today; 60+ years later!

After travelling extensively throughout the Pacific with his military career, John retired after 20 years and used his Master’s degree in Educational Psychology to become a school teacher at Barber’s Point Elementary School where he retired after another 23 years.  John always loved Hawaiian music and first discovered WCC when he took a ‘ukulele class from Stan Jackson.  When Stan left, John stepped in and took Stan’s volunteer instructor role.  Thinking they should move closer to their two daughters in Virginia, John and Flor moved to the mainland briefly in 2010 but were back within six months.  “It is one of the things I am most proud of”, states John, “that we made the decision to return to Hawai`i.”  Son John also lives here and is a Piano Performance Teacher, so family is still close by.  They treasure their lifestyle and friends in Hawaii so much more since returning.  John has been a volunteer instructor for the Hawaiian Style ‘Ukulele class for 7-8 years.  He says many of the regulars are like himself . . .came to Hawai`i and fell in love with it and its music!  We TREASURE YOU, JOHN SIGNOR. . . and the genuine commitment and dedication you demonstrate to WCC, our members and guests.  (Return to top)

Perhaps you’ve noticed a new presence near the main office.  Members Dawn Ward, Lillian Chace and Helene Webster have volunteered to staff the newly created “Welcome Desk” 1-3 times weekly in the mornings from 9-11 a.m.  The Welcome Desk was a brainstorm of the Member Advisory Council members who felt that a personalized approach by members to newcomers was a great way to welcome and encourage others to utilize WCC.  The Volunteers will be greeting newcomers, answering questions, providing information and written materials and encouraging others to take part in WCC sponsored activities.  If you are interested in offering your time as a volunteer for this purpose, please contact Barbara at (808) 923-1802.

YOGA BASICS W/FRANKLIN SUNG

Tuesdays, 9-10:30AM , 202E $2/$4

Franklin Sung, our Yoga Basics Instructor, has been volunteering for the past 1.5 years.  At an early age, Franklin’s grandmother, the village healer in her native Vietnam, exposed Franklin to the universal connections between body, mind and spirit and taught him about the natural intelligence of the body.  Franklin feels that ‘yoga mimics life” and by practicing one-to-two times weekly, great benefits are realized.  His emphasis is always on safety so Franklin takes time to speak with each student prior to class to be mindful of individual needs and better customize his classes to create a positive progression for the students.  “What makes a good teacher is someone who will be conscientious of each student’s perspectives, different levels of ability and who strives to create a level of comfort during the process so they go home happy – as long as I have enough, I want to give back and this is the best way for me to do it.”  We think so too!  Come join us every Tuesday – Yoga Basics!
