UPDATE ON SB2469 RELEASE OF FUNDS FOR WCC

Mahalo nui loa to each of you who helped support SB 2469, Relating to the Emergency and Budget Reserve Fund, or the “Rainy Day” Bill, which included funds for WCC’s Senior Program, during this legislative session.  Thanks to your help and that of Waikiki’s legislators, this bill was passed in the legislature in May 2010 and avoided a veto from Gov. Lingle.  Now, we are just waiting for Gov. Lingle to release the $150,000 that was appropriated to WCC in the bill.

We really appreciate your emails and phone calls to legislators and the Governor’s office during and after the legislative session.  You made a big difference in ensuring that this funding is available to support WCC’s seniors!

What’s next?  As of this newsletter printing, WCC, along with many other human service agencies whose funding was included in SB2469, are still waiting for the Governor to release the funds.  We may need to call upon you in the near future to help us ask the Governor to make the funds available to us.  Stay tuned!  (Return to top)

Waikiki Community Center is proud to introduce artist Mark N. Brown with “Art with Mark” for 10 weeks starting September 2nd.

You don’t need to be an artist, or familiar with art, just bring enthusiasm!  Mark Brown will teach “How to See” where everyone has a voice and will use paint to express that voice.  You will learn:

v  Design  - Learn how to attract a viewer’s eye into a painting and how to keep it there.

v  Value - Light to dark, how to build a dramatic painting using lighting as a tool, pretending you’re a lighting director on a movie set.

v  Color – How to get infinite colors from just 5 primary plus use of neutrals and grays.

v  Drawing – Learn how to look at objects as shapes and how to use negative shapes to sharpen your design.

You’ll also learn how to decide what medium to paint in – watercolor, oil and acrylic.  Oils recommended; but will accept those who use watercolor or acrylic.

Mark Brown was born and raised in Hawaii – encouraged by his teachers and inspired by his family to develop his art talents.  Mark’s love of the Hawaiian Islands and people is evident in his paintings, a majority of which are done on site outdoors, in the “Plein Air” (Fr. ‘open air’) mode of great impressionists.

In addition to painting, Mark runs weekly uninstructed life drawing classes at Chaminade University of Honolulu. Mark's artwork has evolved to include murals, CD covers and commissioned paintings of scenic locations and portraits.

Fee for WCC members is $150, non members $200 for 10 week course.  Single class fee is $20/$28. At the first class Mark will show students what materials to purchase.  Arrangements will be made to meet Mark at Hawaiian Graphics for materials and supplies.  Sign up now.  Please register by August 13 (10 minimum, 25 maximum per class).
