Ala Wai Challenge - Sunday, January 28, 2007

Once again the Ala Wai Canal will come alive with canoe   racing excitement!  Join us for Waikiki Community Center’s 22nd Ala Wai Challenge scheduled Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Ala Wai Neighborhood Park.  This fun-filled day starts at 8 a.m. with the Opening Ceremonies Canoe procession from McCully bridge and ancient Hawaiian protocol.  Watch exciting races in the Ala Wai Canal and check out the field as teams participate in  Hawaiian Makahiki games.  Craft vendors, ethnic foods and entertainment will be available throughout the day.  This event will honor Living Surf Legends of Hawaii Peter Cole & Fred Van Dyke, two of the greatest big wave surfers in the history of the sport.  Free trolley shuttle will start at 7am, picking up at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and the bus depot at Paoakalani Avenue at Waikiki Beach Marriott.  Water taxis will pick up guests at Olohana Street.  Form a team of twelve and join the fun—cost is $420 and includes event shirt, all equipment and lunch.  Volunteers are needed to assist at the event—call Jeff Apaka, Event Coordinator at 923-1802 .  For more info on Ala Wai Challenge click here.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! 

On behalf of our board and staff we wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a Safe, Joyous and Healthy New Year!  We have a number of wonderful classes and events scheduled in December to celebrate the holiday season, we hope you will enjoy the activities planned. 

·       HOLIDAY TABLE DECORATION CLASS w/Ellen Katoda Wednesday, December 6th, 9:30-11 a.m.  Make your own table decorations and candle centerpiece and get into the holiday spirit.  Cost is $12 for members and $15 for non members and includes all materials.  You are encouraged to bring items to add a personal touch to your decoration.  Register early! 

·          CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TROLLEY RIDE—Monday, December 11th.  The bus departs at 6:30 p.m. (meet at 6pm) and returns by 8:30 p.m.  Bring a sweater or jacket.  SORRY, THIS TOUR IS SOLD OUT. 

·          ANNUAL WCC CHRISTMAS SUPPER —scheduled on Sunday, December 24 (Eve) at 2pm at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Mauka Maloko room (2424 Kalakaua Ave.).  Cost is $12 for members and $15 for non members.  Purchase your tickets early, limited to 100 people—family, guests and friends invited.  Entertainment, games and door prizes.  Dinner includes: Choice of pork loin or turkey with all the holiday trimmings.  Call now—few tickets left!

WCC’s MONTHLY GIVING PROGRAM

 FRIDAY UKULELE CLASS

New session starts 12/15—Previous experience required

9-11 a.m., WCC Auditorium

 John Signor will begin a new 10-week Hawaiian Style Ukulele Class beginning Friday, December 16th in WCC Auditorium.  Cost is $30 for WCC members and $50 for non-members when you prepay and register for the full 10-week series.  Individual classes are $4 and $7 for non members.  Register at office today.  Please note, no refunds after payment.  Thank you!

 

TAI CHI WITH STUART ROBSON

Wednesdays, 9:30am-10:30 a.m., WCC Lawn

Tai Chi classes will begin Wednesday, December 6th at 9:30 a.m. taught by Stuart Robson.  Weather permitting,   classes will be held on WCC lawn.  This 10-week session is $10 for members or $30 for non members and should be prepaid in advance.  Individual class fee is $2 for members and $4 for non members.

 

WASHINGTON PLACE & ST. ANDREWS CATHEDRAL—December 6th  9:30 a.m.

 Meet Jeff at 9:30 a.m. at Washington Place (320 Beretania Street) for a historical tour of Queen Lili’uokalani’s home.  The lovely home is former residence of Hawaii’s Governors. 

 Travel to St. Andrews Cathedral where we’ll join Ms. Lee-Loy as she describes the history of the Cathedral and the intricate remains that are present in and around Queen Emma Square grounds. 

 Cost is $3 for members for both tours and $7 for non members.  No transportation provided.  Register by 12/1.  Sorry, no refunds once paid.   Partial funding for this activity has been provided by a grant from the Friends of Hawaii Charities. 

SOUTH ASIAN HEALTHY FOOD, ART & DANCE

Friday, December 1st 5:30-7:30 p.m. ~ WCC Auditorium $5/$10

 Mark your calendars & join us for this special international cultural event at WCC on Friday,  December 1st starting at 5:30 p.m.  Food, crafts, arts and dances will be showcased, dinner included in ticket price. 

 Get your tickets today.  Due to the popularity of this event, it has been increased to 75 attendees.  $5 for members/$10 non members.  South Asian mini meal will be served. A Fun evening planned, sign up now.  Sorry, no refunds after payment made.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS & PLANNING

January 3—Wednesday, 10 a.m., WCC Auditorium

 The Oahu Civil Defense Agency is presenting this educational and very informative seminar on Wednesday, January 3, at 10 a.m. in WCC Auditorium.  You will learn about:  Ways to prepare your own home disaster kit, how hurricanes and tsunamis and other hazards affect our State, planning and preparing for disasters and hands-on basic emergency first aid training. 

 A special drawing for Basic First Aid kits will be given to lucky attendees registered for this class.  Please sign up and pay at WCC office.  Cost is $1 for members and $5 for non members.

GOOD NUTRITION

Thursday, January 4, 2007, 10 a.m., Chapel

  Enjoy tasting nutritional foods prepared by Joannie Dobbs and Mele Fernandez, Assistant Human    Nutrition Specialists at University of Hawaii.      Demonstrations and samplings will be conducted in the WCC Chapel on Thursday, January 4th starting at 10-11 a.m.  Free parking, come early.

Everyone knows that nutrition is important for your health.  Come and taste foods that are both nutritious and taste good!  Samplings will be provided.

Call 923-1802 to make a reservation.  Cost is $3 for members and $5 for non members to cover the cost of ingredients and supplies.  Space is limited to the first 20.  See you there!
