22nd WCC ALA WAI CHALLENGE
HONORS
TWO
GREAT LEGENDARY SURF ICONS
Sunday, January 28, 2007
Ala Wai Neighborhood Park
8 a.m.—1 p.m.
Once
again the Ala Wai Canal will come alive with canoe racing
excitement! Join us for
Waikiki Community Center’s 22nd Ala Wai Challenge presented by
Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort scheduled
Sunday,
January 28, 2007 at
Ala Wai Neighborhood Park.
This fun-filled day starts at 8 a.m. with the Opening
Ceremonies Canoe procession from McCully bridge and ancient Hawaiian
protocol. Watch
exciting races in the Ala Wai
Canal and check out the field as teams participate in Hawaiian Makahiki
games. Craft vendors,
ethnic foods and entertainment will be available throughout the
day. Water taxi
available to/from event.
This
year WCC honors Living Surf Legends of Hawaii
Peter
Cole & Fred Van Dyke, two
of the greatest big wave surfers in the history of
sport.
Peter
Cole
is a big wave icon. At over 76 (who’s counting?), he is the oldest
big wave surfer in Hawaii, at one time the best surfer in the world,
and previous Chairman of the Surfrider Foundation.
Fred
Van Dyke
is a teacher, author, and also a pioneer of big wave surfing. He moved to Hawaii in the
50’s to surf the big waves, taught at Punahou School, and has
written several books about his experiences. A physical fitness
enthusiast, Fred still surfs the 10-footers regularly and gives
multi-media presentations on healthy aging and surfing throughout
the country. Waikiki
Community Center is proud to be honoring these great legends and
invites you to join us January 28th!
Free
trolley
shuttle will start at 7am, picking up at Royal Hawaiian Shopping
Center and the bus depot at Paoakalani Avenue at Waikiki Beach
Marriott. Water taxis
will pick up guests at Olohana Street. Form a team of twelve and
join the fun—cost is $420 and includes event shirt, all equipment
and lunch. Enjoy
the day at Ala Wai Challenge—entertainment, craft vendors, ethnic
food booths and witness exciting races and Hawaiian
games

CHARITABLE SOLUTIONS TO PLANNING
DILEMMAS
Each year, many members and
friends of Waikiki Community Center are pleased to learn that their
gifts can take different forms beyond payroll deductions and annual
contributions. By being aware of the variety of choices
available to you, you may identify those who can help
enhance your financial picutre while helping others in the
community.
Each month we'll illustrate some popular giving
options you may want to consider. Please remember
Waikiki Community Center in your will or
trust.
Gifts of Depreciated
Stock. Mrs. M owns shares of stock that have
decreased in value since she purchased them. Rather than give
the stock outright, her advisor suggests she sell the stock and give
the cash proceeds instead. Using this approach, she can fund
the gift she had wanted to make to WCC while creating a capital loss
for income tax purposes.
Your year round gifts to WCC help
provide on-going support to help in the community. With
careful thought and planning, you can maximize your gifts as you
minimize your taxes. Call WCC for more options or to learn how
to include WCC in your Will or Trust. Mahalo! (Return to
