DUKE KAHANAMOKU CHALLENGE 2011

To Benefit Waikiki Community Center

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort & Spa

The Waikiki Community Center (WCC) invites to you to celebrate the 26th annual Waikiki Community Center Duke Kahanamoku Challenge, a Duke OceanFest event (formerly called WCC Ala Wai Challenge) on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort & Spa!

The Challenge is a fun, community event for both local residents and visitors featuring canoe racing, ancient Hawaiian Makahiki games, Hawaiian and Tahitian entertainment from two stages, food and craft booths.   First established in 1985 as a community service project by the Waikiki Jaycees, the event is now positioned as the signature sports fundraising event benefiting the WCC.

Sponsored by Hilton Hawaiian Village, festivities kick off at 9 a.m. with a double-hulled canoe procession, an oli` and kahiko by Halau Hula `o Hokulani and Kumu Hula Hokulani DeRego and Larry DeRego.  The racing competition begins at 10 a.m. with a huki kaula (tug of war) and final awards presentation at 2 p.m.

Form a team of twelve (6 to paddle and 6 to compete in Makahiki Games) and join the fun!  $600 team fee includes use of canoe equipment, 10x10’ tent, event shirts and lunch for 12 team members.  Register now by calling (808) 923.1802.

Each year the challenge honors two water sports legends of Hawaii.  The 2011 honorees are the Pi`ilani`a family and the late Mau Piailug.  The Pi`ilani`a family is a living legend of ocean mariners, canoe builders and canoe paddlers.  The late Mau Piailug was a teacher who taught Nainoa Thompson, navigator of Hokule`a, the traditional, non-instrument art of sea voyaging.   Both honorees are legendary and continue to perpetuate the legacy of native Hawaiian canoeing.

The Duke Kahanamoku Challenge also will feature Hawaiian crafts, live entertainment from two stages, delicious ethnic food booths, lomi lomi massage and an invitational stand-up paddleboard relay.  The organizers will once again offer the ever-popular double-hulled water taxi canoes.  Free canoe taxi service pick-up will be located at both sides of Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Ongoing entertainment from two stages will start at 9 a.m. with the Royal Hawaiian Band.  There is no charge for spectators watching the races, competition and entertainment.

House Passes Tax Bill with Estate Law, IRA Charitable Rollover Extension

The IRA Charitable Rollover, a part of the Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010, would allow donors age 70½ to exclude from their taxable income any IRA funds up to $100,000 that have been withdrawn and transferred to a charity when filing a tax return. Through December 31, 2011, the Charitable IRA Rollover permits taxpayers ages 70 ½ and older to make tax-free charitable gifts totaling up to $100,000 per year from traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) and Roth IRAs.  Typically, taxpayers age 70 ½ and older are required to make annual distributions from their retirement accounts.  The regular distributions are included in the taxpayers’ adjusted gross income (AGI), and taxpayers pay taxes on them.  However, the Charitable IRA Rollover enables taxpayers to make donations directly to charitable organizations, such as WCC, from the IRAs without counting them as part of the AGI and, consequently, without paying taxes on them.  Donors cannot take a charitable deduction for these rollover gifts and he transfer is made directly from a trustee to the charitable organization.

Example: Suppose Katharine has $500,000 in an IRA and will be required to withdraw approximately $25,000 this year, and suppose that she also wants to contribute $20,000 to Waikiki Community Center (WCC).  She can authorize the administrator of the IRA to transfer $20,000 to WCC and $5,000 to herself.  The $20,000 distributed to NPT will not be subject to tax and will be counted toward her annual minimum distribution.

Please remember WCC in your will and trusts.  Leave a legacy and make a difference in the lives of others and for WCC.  During life’s struggles, we are often reminded that more must be done to continue positive, humane acts of kindness, and to sustain community, youth and senior programs for all.

Do One Green Thing:  Saving the Earth through Simple, Everyday Choices by Mindy Pennybacker

Wednesday, January 26th in the WCC Chapel.  10:30AM – 12 Noon.

The green movement has gone from esoteric to popular over the last several years, a good sign for both the environment and those of us who live in it. But most Americans need to streamline, rather than complicate, their lives.  Do One Green Thing: Saving the Earth through Simple, Everyday Choices, is ideal for those who are looking for easy and achievable ideas for their daily lives.  Mindy discusses a broad range of questions in four sections: food and drink, green and healthy home, personal care and apparel and transportation.

A Punahou graduate, Mindy is a journalist specializing in personal and environmental health and helping consumers identify truly, verifiably green products. For 11 years she was editor-in-chief of THE GREEN GUIDE and co-founder of thegreenguide.com; She’s also been editor-in-chief of Honolulu Weekly, and a senior editor at Plenty and This Old House magazines. Her writing has appeared in Glamour, The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Sierra, The Nation, Worldwatch,Sprig.com and elsewhere. With this book she has been interviewed on national T.V. including being a guest with Martha Stewart.  "The key to making green a byword in everyone's life is ease of access," Meryl Streep wrote in the foreword. "This focus is what makes Do One Green Thing such a pleasure to read."  www.greenerpenny.com  (Return to top)

MAHALO TO OUR CHRISTMAS ELVES

Each year, WCC Early Education Center hosts a special Christmas Party for Jefferson School’s Orthopedic Unit with gifts and refreshments, sponsored by Hawaii Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association, International (HHSMAI) and Duke’s Restaurant.  In addition, Christmas caroling by Salvation Army Brass Band and Singers, miniature horses, magic and juggling by Greg Gabaylo, Santa Claus and his (poodle) reindeers and Honolulu’s finest, HPD were scheduled to perform and assist.  Unfortunately, we had to cancel at the last minute due to health reasons of the keiki.  We wanted to thank our sponsors, friends once again for their support and sharing their aloha for this special event.

Wrapped gifts were delivered to both WCC EEC classrooms and students at Jefferson Elementary compliments of Santa, HHSMAI and Duke’s Waikiki Restaurant staff and members.  Happy Holidays to all!  We look forward to a non-sniffling party next year, December 1, 2011!

Reminder!  Delicious Cookie Corner cookies available at WCC $6!  Proceeds to benefit WCC’s Early Education Center.  3 flavors:  Chocolate Chip w/nuts, Oatmeal/Raison and Chocolate Chip Trio.  (Return to top)

OLELO NO’EAU HAWAIIAN PHRASES

‘A’ole I ke’ehi kapua’I ike one o Hauiki.

Has not set foot on the sands of Hauiki.

One does not know much about a place until one has been there.

(We invite you to visit WCC to see for yourself the good that is happening!  Share the Center with your friends, family and neighbors and let them experience for themselves)

WCC OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON THURSDAYS

Effective January 1 the Waikiki Community Center office will close on Thursdays.  While this represents a change in operations the Center will make more efficient use of its facilities, reduce utility expense and not incur added staff expense to a 10% Thursday staff furlough instituted by the board of directors back in June, 2009.

Thursdays at the Center have been the lightest in scheduling, so it makes operational sense, until we can build program enrollments, to make this change. The majority of classes and activities formerly held on Thursdays have been already consolidated on other days of the week.  A few will continue to run on Thursdays through the first quarter of the year and arrangements have been made with the instructors for collecting fees and attendance sheets.

Our attention has turned to improved marketing, sales and promotion of program services at the Center. We’re confident that in due time, as we succeed in building demand and attracting new participants, that we will restore our operations to a full 5-day week.

We thank you for your continued patronage, participation and support.  If you have any questions, please contact Michael Lee, Interim Executive Director at (808) 923.1802

Let’s Speak English w/Muriel - January 3-28, 15 classes, Monday, Tuesday, Wed. & Friday

WELCOME DONNA SALLAS, NEW OFFICE CLERK!

We are very pleased to announce the transfer of Ms. Donna Sallas to the position of Office Clerk at the Waikiki Community Center, effective December 16, 2010.

Donna has served the Waikiki Community Center since 1999 as the Thrift Shop Manager.  In this capacity, Donna has cultivated many friendships and has helped establish WCC’s Thrift Shop as a special place where members and friends stop to chat, shop and just hang out.  During the past several years, Donna began to assist the office staff after store hours and became an integral part of the operation.  She has also been a tremendous help after the passing of Gail Miraflor, and the transition to the Office Clerk position was a natural progression of events.  Needless to say, we are always delighted when talented individuals within the organization are able to fill our vacancies.

Donna brings many positive qualities to her new role and we are very excited about the new addition to the administration team.  Please join me in congratulating Donna into her new role.  (Return to top)
