INVITING CANOE PADDLERS TO
JOIN DUKE KAHANAMOKU
CHALLENGE
a benefit for Waikiki
Community Center
presented by Hilton
Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort and
Hilton Grand Vacations
Club
Sunday, February 12,
2012, 9am-3pm
Inviting all canoe paddlers (experienced and beginners)
to form a team of twelve and register for the 2012 Annual Duke Kahanamoku
Challenge scheduled Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Hilton
Hawaiian Village Duke Beach!
Join us for a day of fun – canoe paddling, Hawaiian Makahiki
games, Stand Up Paddling Competition (special invitation only),
Craft Fair, entertainment, food booths and more.
This year’s event is in honor of the Duke Kahanamoku Surf
Team – Paul Strauch, Jr.,
Fred Hemmings, Joey Cabell, Butch Van Artsdalen
(posthumous). These
legendary surfers have perpetuated the legacy of native Hawaiian
surfing in the community.
Duke’s Surf Team can be considered Duke’s last real
involvement in surfing before his death in
1968.
Event begins at 9 a.m. with the Opening Ceremony with Royal
Hawaiian Band, Halau Hula `o Hokulani and double-hulled canoe
procession with our honorees across the Rainbow Lagoon. Canoe races and ancient
Hawaiian Makahiki land games begin at 10 a.m. along the Duke
Beach. In the Lagoon,
the Invitational Stand Up Paddle Relay (SUP) begins at 10 a.m. – a
special challenge race among Waikiki hotel and management, another
exciting race! Closing
ceremony and awards follows the popular Huki Kaula (Tug of War) and
the 6 man canoe “Ama Glide” along the beach front. Bring your sun screen and
enjoy the day with your family and
friends!
Also enjoy non-stop entertainment on the Great Lawn with hula
performances and special artists, and be sure to check out the
Hawaiian Craft booths and Hilton BBQ food booth too. Parking available at hotel –
self park $8 and valet $13 with validation. Special kama`aina hotel
rates available at the hotel by calling 949-4321 – make it a full
weekend!
Call Waikiki Community Center at 808 923 1802 for more
information about this fun event, register a team or craft booth or

Waikiki Community Center (WCC)
is partnering with AARP Foundation to provide a FREE Tax-Aide
Program which helps seniors and those with low-to-moderate
income prepare tax returns beginning on Thursday, February 2nd and
every Thursday through April 12. This is a WALK IN
service, no apointment required.
Volunteer tax preparers will be available to assist from 9:30 a.m. -
1:00 p.m. in the WCC Auditorium.
Last year the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, program helped an estimated 2.5 million taxpayers navigate
complicated tax codes, ensured proper credits and deductions were
taken and filed returns to the Internal
Revenue Service and state and local tax
agencies.
Established in 1968 with four
volunteers, the AARP Foundation program has blossomed
into a national program with about 35,000 volunteers, each one
trained by AARP and certified by the IRS. Last year, the volunteers
helped users get refunds totaling $1.2 billion and earned income tax
credits totaling $233 million.
The program is one of AARP's
largest service activities, with people signing up as future volunteers
year-round. Information
