WAIKIKI COMMUNITY CENTER CELEBRATES 30 YEARS!  

In observance of our 30th anniversary we will be offering free classes throughout the year, just for you!  This is our way of saying thank you to our dedicated members who have supported us throughout the years.  We hope you take advantage of these special offers.  Great chance to meet new friends, learn a new skill, hobby and have fun!

BABY GUESSING CONTEST

You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby! 

 We invite our members and staff to enter this fun contest by bringing a baby picture of yourself and dropping it off with Aura no later than July 25th.  Insert in an envelope and write your name and phone number.

 The Baby Guessing Contest will be held during August and on display August 1-22nd.  All baby pictures will be on display in the WCC Administration building.  Guess how many of your friends you recognize when they were a little sweet pea!  Pick up a contest form at the front desk starting Monday, August 1 until 28th.  The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be posted in September and will receive gifts!  Good luck and hunt for those photos!  Join the fun! 

NEW PHONE SYSTEM AT WCC

We’re happy to report, Waikiki Community Center has installed a new phone system which includes voicemail and other modern features.  Our old phone system was donated and in use for over 20 years.

Office staff will continue to answer incoming calls with a ‘live’ voice; however, after three (3) rings it will automatically go to voicemail where you can leave a short, detailed message and staff will call you back .  Staff extensions are:

Malama Seniors in Waikiki Presentation

 Waikiki Community Center members are extremely fortunate to have a very valuable service called the Malama Seniors in Waikiki.  This service provides outreach to seniors (over 60) with comprehensive case management services by a licensed Social Worker with years of gerontology experience.  Services include counseling, caregiver support, advocacy, referrals and links to community agencies (for personal care, housekeeping, bathing, shopping, etc.).  If you or someone you know may need help please stop by or call us at 923-1802.   

 DISASTER & EMERGENCY PREPARATION

 Hurricane season is approaching, are you prepared?  John Cummings Jr. w/Emergency Management Agency will help improve our skills and provide updated emergency and disaster procedures.

PROJECT VISION VAN

July 17, 8am-noon, Ohua Parking

The Project Vision Van is a mobile eye screening unit that provides a retinal scanning for FREE and is coming to WCC on June 19 and July 17.  These images can be used to detect Macular Degeneration, Diabetes, Glaucoma and Cataracts and takes only 5-10 minutes.  Register at WCC today.

NA MEA O HAWAII, Things of Hawaii

   Made in Hawaii Classes w/Ainsely Halemanu

June 24 to July 24, $75/$100 all 10 classes or $10/$15 for individual classes, 10-11:30 a.m.

 Na Mea O Hawaii is a 5 week (10 classes) held each Tuesday and Thursday from June 24 to July 24 featuring Hawaiian culture kumu, Ainesly Halemanu.  He will teach a variety of Hawaiiana crafts, supplies are NOT included, the kit may be purchased by paying at WCC office when you register, at least one week prior to each class.  Important to bring own scissors.  See list for additional information, supplies needed and class details. 

 July 1—Lei Kui.  Lecture about different sewing methods and info of local flowers, background and care of leis.

July 3—Ukulele Mele.  Learn to play selected song.

July 8—Hula.  Basic fundamentals of steps, adornments, styles of hula vamps.  Learn all facets of hula.  Hand out distributed.

July 10—Hula.  Selected Hawaiian song to learn, open to all student levels.  Hand outs & music sheets.

July 15—Ni’ihau Shell Ear rings.  Learn the secret art as done by people of the island of Ni’ihau.  Clean, pierce, thread and tie in the pikake style to create your own ear ring set.  Kit is $25 or bring your own supplies, see list for details.

July 17—Himeni Kakou.  Learn and sing popular Hawaiian songs.  Ukulele players welcome to play along.  Kit is $5 and includes music sheets w/words and ukulele chords.

July 22—Kukui Nut Pendant & Ear rings.  Raw kukui nut to be sanded into gleaming pendant and ear ring.  Kit is $10 or supplies required, see list for info.

July 24—Kamane Nut Pendant/Earring.  New kamane nut made into earrings and pendant.  Learn weaving of raffia to thread pendant.  Kit is $10 or supplies required, see list for details.

Register today by calling WCC at 923-1802.  Don’t forget to pick up class info sheet for full details on class and supplies needed.  Class fees do NOT include supplies and/or kits needed each week.  Register and pay for kits at least one week prior,   Classes will be held in the WCC Chapel.  Book early, these Hawaiiana classes usually fill and sell out quickly!

      DAY IN WAIALUA—EXCURSION

              Friday, July 25, 8am-4pm, $50/$75

Join Aura and Jeff on a day excursion to Waialua Sugar Plantation, Kamauoha Noni Farm, Dillingham Airfield, Mokuleia Polo Farm, Island X Chocolate Store, Helemano Christmas Tree Farm with lunch (included) at Helemano Plantation.  Maximum 20 passengers, book early!  Deadline to register is 7/11.  Sorry, no refunds once booked.  Lots of fun!

COMPLETE LIFE SERIES

WITH SARAH ROBINSON CONTINUES

Sarah Robinson, a volunteer with Funeral Consumers Alliance Hawaii, will be leading the “Complete Life Series”.  Developed by the University of Hawaii’s Center on Aging, the Complete Life Series is designed to answer questions about end of life issues, death care, and bereavement.  Participants will receive a booklet and handouts to serve as a resource for future use. 

 These series will be held on the 4th Wednesday of each month till August 20 with an end of series discussion on August 27, 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the WCC Auditorium.  Participation is free, and we ask you to attend all sessions.  On August 27th, Sarah will present a graduation certificate and refreshments will be served only to those who have completed all five courses.  (Return to top of page)
