NATIONAL SAFETY CROSSWALK DAY

More than 200 volunteers across the island of O’ahu joined forces on May 11, 2006 for theAARP National Safety Crosswalk Day” to evaluate roadways for pedestrian safety.  Waikiki Community Center was there in force with members and staff wearing the AARP National Safety Day t-shirts and Walk Wise Hawaii blinking lights on their sleeve.  Volunteers spent an hour at the intersection of Kuhio Avenue and Kaiolu Street to monitor this busy crosswalk and has no traffic light signal .  The group found it necessary to have a light put there for the safety of the Waikiki residents and the families who need to cross or catch the City bus.  There is a traffic signal light on each intersection from Namahana to Paoakalani, but none at Kaiolu Street.

WCC would like to thank Mary Guidroz, Dottie Burns, Vickie Scott and Roland Na’auao, WCC members who joined us the WCC/AARP event.  Council member Charles Djou, Lt. Col. & Mrs. Larry Connell, Derek   Tamura, Louis Ertescheck and Jeff Apaka were also on hand to support and observe the “cross walkability” for Waikiki residents.

The purpose of the AARP National Safety Day is aimed at raising awareness of how motorists and pedestrians can co-exist safely by identifying structural and behavioral changes that may help make neighborhoods safer for all people of all ages.  The “walkability” assessments were held along many of Hawaii’s busiest streets—including our own Kaiolu Street in busy Waikiki.

For more information about this project visit their website at www.aarp.org/states/hi/hi-communityservice/pedestrian_safety_the_focus_of_hawaii.

Estate Planning Information

An estate plan is like a structure to be built.  You spend your lifetime gathering materials, tangible possessions like your home, plus intangible assets like stocks.  You find tools—a will, trusts, a life insurance policy—to work with.  You develop blueprints—strategies that provide for the needs of your beneficiaries and save taxes to guide you.  Building a good estate plan may also require the skills of an attorney, an accountant, a financial advisor and a gift planning officer.

Gifts in the form of money, property, investments or a portion of an estate help Waikiki Community Center continue its programs and ensure the continued vitality of Waikiki Community Center for generations to come.  These gifts have a tremendous impact on our ability to provide quality     social, health and educational programs for senior adults, help starving children and families through our Emergency Food Pantry, and help young learners prepare for kindergarten.  Tax benefits may be derived from these gifts.

There are several ways you can name Waikiki Community Center as a beneficiary in your Will or trust.  You may choose to give specific assets, a portion of your estate, or your residual estate after payment of other bequests.

You can state how you would like your gift to be used.

·          For a specific purpose or program.

·          Designate “wherever the need is the greatest” so that WCC can choose to use our gift to fulfill our mission.

·          Direct gift to our annual fund.

·          Direct gift to our endowment fund.

One of a few sample bequest language to use in Wills—”I give ___% of my estate to be used by Waikiki Community Center, located at 310 Paoakalani Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815 wherever the need is greatest.”

To find out how you can include your charitable intentions in your estate plans, please contact our Director of Development at (808) 923-1802. (Learn more about ways to help WCC...click here)

NO MORE BROWN SPOTS—MINI FACE LIFT

Wednesday, June 21, 10-11 a.m., WCC Aud., free

Dr. Mina Ganapathy

Attend this free seminar by Dr. Mina Ganapathy and learn the latest in laser technology and what it can do for your skin.  Brown spots and facial redness are eliminated safely and painlessly with the “cool tipped” laser.  It requires no down time and one can go out the very same day.  With monthly treatments, over 3-4 months, the skin becomes clearer, pores get smaller, the texture is smoother, softer.  An additional benefit of treatments is that the collagen tissue also absorbs the heat.  As a result, the skin looks firmer with a nice youthful glow.  This is the painless way to get a ‘mini face life” without going under the surgeon’s knife and can be safely done in a doctor’s office.  Call 923-1802 for a seat reservation by June 1 for this free session.
