COME OUT TO PADDLE FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
Waikiki
Community Center Ala Wai Challenge raises
$19K!
Presented by Hawaiian Electric
Company
Waikiki Community Center’s
25th Annual Ala Wai Challenge, sponsored by Hawaiian Electric
Co., was enjoyed by over two thousand Hawaii residents and
visitors on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Ala Wai Neighborhood
Park. This cultural
event showcased how the Hawaiian people competed in these unique
sport games, only found in Hawaii, and honored two water sports
legends: Tae Perry and
Hannie Anderson. Hundreds lined up on the makai side of the Ala Wai
Canal to catch the famous water canoe taxi which ferry them to the
event and view the floral double-hulled canoe procession.
In addition to canoe racing
and Hawaiian Makahiki games, one of the biggest hits was the
traditional hand pounded taro booth, fascinating visitors on how poi
is made. This was one
of the few events on O’ahu where attendees could experience the
ancient sport of Hawaiian culture known as Makahiki.
The final results for 2010 are:

MEET LILLIAN CHACE,
SENIOR ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC) MEMBER
This month we introduce Lillian Chace. Lillian is an East
Coaster by origin and worked in New York for a number of years with
a company that signed notable individuals for national lectures and
TV. Lillian’s position
involved initiating contact with individuals such as the US
Ambassador to the UN, arctic explorers, Senators and other famous
personalities. She
lived in Iran while her husband took a special assignment with Exxon
and taught English to Iranian women then moved to Vermont where she
started a Hot Meals for Senior’s Program and was in art sales. After visiting Hawaii for 20
years, they moved to Hawaii permanently and joined WCC when a neighbor suggested WCC “as a good place to meet
people.” Lillian
remembers how she felt and she seeks out new members to make them
feel welcome. Lillian
