Saturday, May 19, 2007 starting at McCoy
Pavilion

Association
Waikiki Community Center is recruiting members and friends of
all ages to join the WCC Team and join the Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Saturday, May
19th.
The event starts at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park
with a mini-breakfast served at 6 a.m., a fun warm up stretch at
McCoy Pavilion is at 6:30 a.m. and by 7 a.m. you’re off
walking! Meet at Ala
Moana Beach Park before proceeding on the 6-mile
fun trek (1-mile less this year!) through Waikiki, to Kapahulu
Avenue and back. Return
to McCoy Pavilion for lunch, entertainment, and
prizes!
Over the past 28 years, WCC has
participated in this annual event and is the recipient of their
annual grant awards to support our Childcare programs and Senior
Adult services.
What’s unique about this Walk is the refreshments, snacks and
treats you’ll be served along the route by the participating
hotels, restaurants and businesses. It’s a lot of
fun! Come hungry! By
visiting all 16 check-in stations along the route, you’ll receive a
free AM/FM radio at the
end!
Pick up an application at WCC today. All you need is $35 ($25 for
walkers 18 years and younger) in fees or pledges which should be
turned into WCC no later than May 11 and receive a WCC Ala Wai
Challenge shirt (free) to wear on the walk. There are four sponsored
spots if anyone is interested in participating, call Jeff
today. It’s for a great
cause and helping various non profits in Hawaii including the
Waikiki Community Center!

our recent Senior Advisory Council (SAC) meeting, the committee suggested members wear
name tags on lanyards to help identify and as a way to meet each
other and new members.
Please let us know if you’d be willing to pay an additional
$5 for a WCC lanyard and laminated name badge at time of membership
renewal. A minimal fee
of $5 for replacements.

ALOHA DON HO . . WE’LL REMEMBER
YOU
Waikiki Community Center
extends our condolences and aloha to the family of the beloved Don
Ho. We join the
thousands who mourn the loss of this great entertainer and Waikiki
icon. Joan and Denice
were honored to be in the audience on Thursday, April 12th to see
his last show, and what a show it was! Earlier this year, Don Ho
was selected as one of the Na Mea Makamae o Waikiki, Honoring the
Treasures of Waikik—Kahiau awardees at WCC’s August 10th gala
dinner. Other honorees include Royal Hawaiian Shopping
Center/Kamehameha Schools & Michael Tongg.
Don
Ho’s memorial service will be held at Duke’s statue on Saturday, May
5th at 9 a.m. Bring a
lei and your favorite memories. His show continues at the
Waikiki Beachcomber on Sunday & Thursday nights

who make a monthly contribution to Waikiki Community Center (WCC)
help provide consistent support we need to sustain our year-round

AARP has launched, Divided
We Fail,
a long-term campaign to amplify the voices of Americans who believe
that health and long-term financial security are the most pressing
domestic issues facing our nation and our community. Initial efforts will be
framed around starting a conversation and generating “Millions of
Voices for Change.”

AARP
will present a sit-listen-ask questions-get results presentation on
Wednesday, May 16th at 10 am.
They will then use your voices to pressure candidates and
elected officials to end gridlock and develop solutions for health
and financial security.

we know, diabetes is an epidemic in Hawaii and across the USA. Learn the signs of diabetes,
who is at-risk for developing diabetes, hear about the latest on the
management of diabetes and learn how to prepare and samples healthy
food for people with diabetes.
Presented by Dr.
Cyndy Kahalewai, registered
dietician and certified diabetes educator. It is thought that many more
people may have diabetes and not be aware of the early signs, bring
a friend. Register at
WCC office by 5/7—$3 for members, $6 for non

de Mayo concert starting at 10

Hawaiian Band.
