VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK

Saturday, May 21, 2011

SATURDAY, MAY 21st, 2011

6:00 a.m. – Breakfast/6:30 – Exercise class

7:00 - The Charity Walk Begins

The Visitor Industry Charity Walk’s theme for 2011 is PUT YOUR BEST SLIPPAH FORWARD. The Charity Walk is a statewide event on all islands that happens on the 3rd Saturday every May to raise needed funds for local charities. Waikiki Community Center encourages you to invite your family, and friends to participate in a morning of fun, food (galore) and a little exercise, all for local charities on O`ahu.  All are welcome to morning of food, fun and a bit of exercise outside the McCoy Pavillion at Ala Moana Park starting at 6:00 a.m.  YOU DO NOT have to be a part of the visitor industry to participate!

Applications are available at WCC thru May 16th to participate in the Visitor Industry Charity Walk or call Jeff Apaka at 923-1802.

All you have to do is collect $35 (adult) or $25 (18 and under) in pledges and support this worthwhile cause. When you turn in your pledge of money to WCC each person will receive a 2011 Waikiki Community Center Duke Kahanamoku Challenge t-shirt (limited sizes) to wear on the walk. Remember, anyone can walk. The Charity Walk is the only walk in the state where you can actually gain weight by helping to raise monies for our local charities as you’ll visit various hotels and storefronts offering tasty treats along the race route!

WCC has been a beneficiary of grant funding from the Walk’s proceeds to help support our Early Education Center and Senior Program.  Register today for this fun event!  (Return to top)

See you Saturday, May 21st!

DONOR WARNING

The FBI is advising the public to exercise caution when donating to relief efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan.  The bad guys are out there masquerading as relief organizations nd scooping up the money from well-intentioned donors.  The FBI says it has yet to see proven allegations of fraud orginating in Hawaii.  But the likelihood of fraud occurring is heightened by our relative proximity to Asia and our cultural ties to the Japanese people.  Fraud is likely to occur through phony emails, websites, phone calls, fliers, mailings and people going door to door soliciting contributions.

You can report suspected fraud by using a tip line provided by the FBI and the National Center for Disaster Fraud.  Call (866) 720-5721, e-mail disaster@le.gov or fax to (225) 4-4707.  Consumers can also report suspicious e-mail solicitations or fraudulent websites to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Cener at www.ic.gov.

Here are some guidelines to follow before making a donation:

  • Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming e-mails, including clicking links contained within those messages, because they may contain computer viruses.
  • Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as members of charitable organizations or officals asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites.
  • Beware of organizations wil copy-cat names similar to but not exactly the same as those of reputable charities.
  • Rather than follow a purported link to a website, verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations by utilizing various Internet-based resources that may assist in confirming the group's existence and its nonprofit status.  (www.guidestar.org)
  • Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files because the files may contain viruses.  Only open attachments from known senders.
  • To ensure that contributions are received and used for intended purposes, make contributions directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on your behalf.
  • Do not be pressured into making contributions; reputable charities do not use such tactics.
  • Be aware of whom you are dealing with when providing your personal and financial information.  Providing such information may compromise your identify and make you vulnerable to identity theft.
