NA MEA MAKAMAE O WAIKIKI

A HUGE SUCCESS!

Waikiki Community Center’s signature event was a huge success with many memorable moments.  This annual event honored two Waikiki legends—Outrigger Enterprises and Aunty Genoa Keawe on Friday, August 25th at the Hilton     Hawaiian Village.  Over 760 people attended to support WCC and honor the Kahiau Awardees.

Guests were entertained by Nihoa with Elena Trio, Kaleo Trinidad and his award winning hula halau and Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom.

amy purple dress.jpgA fabulous selection of silent auction prizes and gifts helped increase the spirited bidding, all to raise money for programs and services at Waikiki Community Center.  In addition, guests contributed over $5000 to purchase new books and classroom supplies for WCC Childcare Program with a chance to win a trip for two to San Francisco!

Special mahalo to event chairs: Sharon Weiner & Lynne Waihe’e; Outrigger Enterprises staff and management; Genoa &  Eric Keawe; Hilton Hawaiian Village and WCC Board members for their invaluable assistance and support.  Although final figures are not readily available, we estimate a net profit of $100,000, a record breaking event for WCC.  Proceeds from the event will help WCC continue quality programs and services for our members, cover increased expenses and building maintenance.  A special mahalo to our members and Board who contributed handcrafted items & special gifts for our silent auction.  They were a big hit, thank you!

WELCOME AURA WILSON!

WCC welcomes Aura Wilson, Senior Program Coordinator to WCC’s staff.  Aura will be focusing her time and talents on reaching out to older adults of Waikiki who might need support services, as part of WCC’s Senior Support Services for Waikiki Elder’s project.  She will be meeting with condo resident managers, churches and other community organizations (and you!) to identify seniors in need of help with information, caregiver support, transportation, and other services.

In addition, she will spend time meeting each of you and identifying ways to improve our senior program and activities.

Originally from Kaneohe, Aura has many years of experience working with older adults.  She recently worked at Catholic Charities Hawaii as a Program Specialist at its Lanakila Multipurpose Senior Center.  Please stop by to meet Aura.  She’d love to meet you.  She’s located in the lounge.

From The Little Book of Aloha

NAU KE KU’I, LOHI KA LIMA

When one grinds the teeth, the hand slows.

Forgive and get on with life.  Forgiveness is a great power that brings freedom to all sides. Anger is fear of letting go.  Let go of the past and move on.
