Makamae o Waikiki honors Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa,
Waikiki Improvement Association and William K.H. Mau & Jean and
William K.H. Mau Foundation
Over 750 people
participated in WCC’s 8th Annual Na Mea Makamae o Waikiki
fundraising dinner held Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Sheraton
Waikiki Hotel and helped raise $144,000 for programs and needed
services for Waikiki Community Center! This is an increase of 36%
from last year. WCC was
honored to present our 2010 Kahiau Awards to: Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort
& Spa, Waikiki Improvement Association and William K.H. Mau
& Jean and William K.H. Mau Foundation for their invaluable
contributions to the visitor industry, WCC and the Waikiki
community.

Ihsan, Director of Finance at Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort
& Spa and our stellar Leadership Committee members for sharing

A special evening capped off by a scrumptious dinner prepared
by Sheraton Waikiki staff with great bids on silent and auction
items!
We thank everyone who
helped make this a very special evening and raising needed funds for
our families, senior adults and young children at Waikiki Community
Center and sharing our mission for the work we do for our

It gives me pleasure
as the interim executive director for the Waikiki Community Center
to enclose this edition of our newsletter. It includes news about
the Center's many activities, and invitations to events that bring
people in our community together for the purpose of learning,
fellowship and service.
I am here at the
invitation of the board of the directors to lead the organization
through this transitional period and offer support of its staff and
volunteers, to position the organization for success and the arrival
of the next chief executive and to offer the organization the
benefit of a "fresh pair of eyes"

Looking

Beginning Japanese w/Emily Nitta
will be held every Thursday, 1:30-2:30
p.m. in room 203A starting October 14 for 8 weeks. (October 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4
& 18, Dec. 2, 9 & 16, 2010). Current class continues
until 9/16/2010.
Emily taught for ten years at Kapi’olani
& Leeward Community Colleges but says the classes at WCC will be
held in a casual atmosphere for a fun learning experience. Students will learn simple
introductions, casual conversation, go on field trips and have the
opportunity to practice with native speakers. “We’ll focus on what the
participants want to learn” says Emily. There will be no tests! Emily feels WCC is an
undiscovered gem and is eager to share her time and talents. Join us! (Return to

JUGGLING
EXERCISE CONTINUES
Every Monday, 11am-noon, WCC Aud. $3/$5
Island famous magician Greg Gabaylo teaches “Juggling Exercise” every
Monday, 11am to noon in the WCC Auditorium. Greg plays his favorite
tunes and teach you the simple basics in juggling! It’s a lot of fun –
exercise, mobility and coordination. $3 per class for members or
$5 for non members.
Born and raised in Pearl City and Waipahu, Hawaii Greg is an
accomplished professional entertainer. He’s performed his hypnotist
and juggling acts in Las Vegas, Florida, Chicago, San Francisco,
Japan, Guam and the Philippines. He’s also a local and

ADVISORY COUNCIL CHANGES NAME
TO MEMBER ADVISORY COUNCIL (MAC)
The former Senior
Advisory Council (SAC) is in the process of changing its name to
“Member Advisory Council” (MAC) opening the door to any WCC adult
member to apply to become a participating member of the
Council. There are
currently five (5) positions on the Council with one available to be
filled. Members
role:
- Provide input,
advise and assist with developing and implementing new programs
and activities.
- Serve as a liaison
between WCC members and staff.
- Serve as a
volunteer ambassador at WCC community functions.
- Identify unmet
needs among the populations of Waikiki and determine ways in which
WCC can meet these needs.

–The Art of Self Healing w/Ginny Walden

divide class into groups so they can rotate. Each card takes about 30

Hip Hop
is the culture of today’s youth. CAMP HIP HOP is
a recreational enrichment program for children ages 4-12 which
explores the four main cultural elements of hip-hop: dance,
music, art and poetry. This free event will provide an
opportunity for children to experience and learn about the hip-hop
culture through a series of Saturday classes that will follow the
introductory workshop. (Dates to be finalized) Each class will
include hands-on activities that are interactive and fun.

PING
PONG COACHING & EXHIBITION GAME
October
5 (Tuesday), 3-5pm, free with Alan
Kaichi
Join
us on Tuesday, October 5 Alan Kaichi will give a
free “table tennis” coaching and exhibition Ping Pong Session. This special coaching and
exhibition game is brought to WCC by Alan Kaichi, Aloha Games
2010 Triple gold Champion in table tennis. Alan gold medaled in Men’s
Singles 40+, Men’s Double 40+ and open elite singles. There will be a second
coaching session in January also in preparation for the second
annual WCC Jr. Ping Pong Tournament 2011 scheduled February 11,
2011.
Ping
Pong has been rated as the “World’s Best Brain Sport” by Dr. Daniel
Amen in his book Making A
Good Brain Great.
Ping pong is highly aerobic, uses upper and lower body
muscles, is great for eye-hand coordination and reflexes, and causes
you to use many different areas of the brain at once. It’s a little like aerobic
chess. Join us for this
