Join us
on Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Ala Wai Neighborhood
Park for Waikiki Community Center (WCC) 22nd Annual Ala Wai
Challenge sponsored by Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort. Proceeds
from this event will benefit programs and services for
families, children, and senior adults who live, work and visit
Waikiki.
This year’s event is in honor of two living surfing
legends, life long environmentalists and water sports enthusiasts -
Peter Cole and Fred Van
Dyke.
Both pioneered many of the big wave riding contests on
the North
Shore and continue to
surf and participate in civic and community events. Event
Chair is Chris Tatum, General Manager at Waikiki
Beach Marriott Resort.
The Ala Wai
Challenge is a fun, family event for the whole community, all
ages! First established in 1985 as a community service project
by the Waikiki Jaycees, the event is now positioned as the signature
sports fundraising event benefiting the Waikiki Community Center
(WCC). This year marks the event's 22nd year anniversary
with lots of exciting events planned. Local businesses and community groups are
invited to participate in the day of fun and competition which
includes:
- Quarter-mile canoe
sprint race in Ala Wai Canal (canoes provided).
- Ancient Hawaiian
Makahiki land games.
- Huki Kaula (Hawaiian
Tug-of-War).
The event kicks off with
a double-hulled canoe procession, in 'oli (chant) and Kahiko
(ancient hula and song) by the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Ensemble
class. Following the opening ceremonies, a special line-up of
entertainment is planned.
The fee to sponsor a
12-person team (6 to canoe, 6 to play Makahiki) includes lunch,
snacks, all entrance fees and an event t-shirt for each team members
is $420 a team. Call 923-1802 for team sponsorship fees.
All canoes are provided courtesy of Kamehameha Schools as well as
game equipment. The public is invited to come and play the
Makahiki games for a small nominal donation that helps the Waikiki
Community Center. Food booths, lomi-lomi massage, and unique
Hawaiian craft vendors will be open to the public. Free
trolley service provided from Waikiki hotels to event site,
operating 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. or take the free water taxi. And, of

Aloha 'Aina - Recycling Day a Huge
Success!
A big mahalo to our elected officials who coordinated a
successful "Aloha 'Aina - Recycling Day" on Saturday, February 25,
2006 at the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. Tons of recycling materials
were dropped off - batters, tired, engines, plastic containers,
refrigerators, air conditioners, aluminum cans, newspapers, phone
books and even a used motorcycle! It was a successful
day!
Mahalo to Rep. Anne Stevens, Councilmember Chalres Djour and
Senator Gordon Trimble's office and staff for organizing this
successfull community event. Good job
everone!
Proceeds from the plastic and metal will be donated to
Waikiki Community Center. What a great way to clean up our
island streets, harbors, canals and environment! Special
thanks to Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corp. and Rene
Mancho for their support with volunteers, trucking, and
heavy equipment.
Waikiki Community Center would like to send a big mahalo to
our members and neighbors who "recycled" and helped keep our Hawaii
clean. We'd also like to thank Ilikai Renaissance
Hotel for helping with morning refreshments and the
Harbor Pub and Pizza for the delicious sandwiches
for our hard working volunteers and staff!
Mahalo!
