WAYS TO HELP WAIKIKI COMMUNITY CENTER

Gifts to the Waikiki Community Center are vital to fulfilling our mission and goals.  We rely on the generosity of the community to help support our mission, through both monetary and in-kind donations.  100% of our funding stays right here, in Hawaii, helping families, children and senior adults.  For more information, please call Denice Keliikoa, Director of Development at (808) 923-1802 ext. 108 or e-mail at denice@waikikicommunitycenter.org, we'd love to meet with you and provide you with a personal tour of Waikiki Community Center.  This is a great way to see your gift at work.

Please support Waikiki Community Center this September with the Give Aloha program

at all Foodland and Sak ‘n Save stores!  Our Give Aloha number is #77892

During the month of September Waikiki Community Center will be participating in Give Aloha Foodland’s Annual Community Matching Gifts program with Western Union.

How it Works:  From Sept. 1-30, customers are invited to make donations up to a cumulative total of $249 per person, per organization at checkout.  Be sure to use your Maika’i Card to receive the matching fund.  Our 5-digit code is #77892.  Your donation will be added to your grocery purchase total.  The amount you donated to us and the name of our organization will appear on your receipt. Donor names will not be released by Foodland, so if you would like us to know of your gift, please contact us directly so that we may properly acknowledge your gift.  These contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.  Please save your store receipt for tax purposes since it will be the only record you will have. Mahalo!

        INFO ON PLANNING YOUR ESTATE

  • The only way to ensure that your personal wishes are carried out upon your death is to have an estate plan.  Once you have provided for your loved ones, we hope you will consider a bequest to the Waikiki Community Center.  Your gift, whatever the size, will help fulfill our mission and help other senior adults, families and children in our community.

Many donors ask us the proper way to name WCC in their estate plans.  The following language can be used in a     variety of estate planning tools.

I give and bequeath the sum of $____ (or ___% of my estate) to Waikiki Community Center (310 Paoakalani Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815) to be used for its general purposes.”

You may also give a particular asset (“my shared of ABC stock..”) or a portion of the residue of your estate after other bequests have been paid (“50% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate…”).

Regardless of the size of your estate, proper estate planning is important to ensure your that those assets you have spent a lifetime accumulating are distributed according to your wishes. Contact WCC at 923-1802 for further information.

GIVING STOCK CAN IMPROVE YOUR TAX OUTLOOK

As you begin reviewing your end of year tax strategies we hope you will remember Waikiki Community Center in your giving plans.  One especially advantageous way of giving combines greater tax savings for you while providing additional funds for Waikiki Community Center.  Here’s an example of how this can work.

The Gift.  Mr. Brown purchased publicly traded securities (stocks) 10 years ago at a cost of $5,000.  They are currently valued at $17,000.  Because he has owned the securities more than 1 year and they have increased in value, Mr. Brown can use them to make his year-end gift at a lower out-of-pocket cost.

Increase the savings.  Mr. Brown is entitled to a tax deduction for the full current value of the donated securities, not the lesser amount he paid for it.  In addition, he is not subject to the capital gains tax which would be due on the increase in value of the securities if had sold them.

How the gift is made.  Since Mr. Brown does not hold the stock certificates he wishes to give, he simply contacts his investment broker to handle the transfer to Waikiki Community Center.  For tax purposes, this gift is considered complete at the time of the actual transfer.  To be sure your gift will qualify for a tax deduction, allow enough time for the transfer to be made this year end.

An alternate giving method.  If you do hold the stock certificate, you can simply mail it to WCC, a signed stock power is also needed.  Contact Denice at 923-1802 for more details.

Gifts of personal property.  Items such as antiques, jewelry, coin collections, automobiles and other such assets offer significant tax advantages when given to a non profit like WCC. We turn this into working cash to provide enhanced services for our members—senior adults, families and children.

Let us know if you have any questions.  Mahalo!
