preschool?

The Child Care Connection Hawaii (CCCH) subsidy program helps low-income families to sustain their employment, educational efforts and job training by paying a subsidy for their children who are in the care of DHS-approved child care providers.  Unless child care is required for protective purposes, families must meet income and activity requirements to qualify for this subsidy program.

The Preschool Open Doors (POD) program is a separate subsidy program with limited funds that provides services state-wide to families sending their children to a licensed preschool during the school year prior to kindergarten entry.  The goal of POD is to promote school readiness for children, and the program focuses on meeting the needs of the child.  Parents are not required to have an eligible activity, unlike the CCCH Subsidy program, but they must meet income and other eligibility requirements.  For POD, there is a time-limited application period established and published each year.

THE CREATIVE CURRICULUM

Our curriculum focuses on four major areas of a child’s development: cognitive, social, emotional, and physical.  Activities are designed to meet each child’s needs, abilities and interests at each developmental stage and to enhance learning throughout the day.

One of the exciting things that makes our preschool unique is that we offer further enhancement to children’s learning and social development through a special component in our curriculum; Keiki Building Community through Service Learning.

KEIKI BUILDING COMMUNITY

Through this service learning component of the curriculum, children gain hands-on experience reaching into the neighborhood community and beyond. Classroom curriculum is connected with real issues here in Hawaii and children see that they have the ability to make a positive impact and the power to make a difference in the world around them.

Through engagement in the service learning process, along with facilitated, hands-on experiences in planning and implementing community projects, children have the opportunity to learn the importance and value of community. Research shows that both children and adults gain a sense of self worth and are happier when they feel they are contributing to society, benefitting the “giver” as much as the “recipient."

KINDERGARTEN HERE WE COME!

“I AM! I CAN!”  captures Waikīkī Community Center’s Preschool philosophy.  We strive to help children develop into confident and competent learners, endowed with a zest for life and an appetite for all that life offers. This philosophy invites and encourages children to think creatively, to use of all of their senses and to become involved in every facet of learning.

Innovative developmentally appropriate activities, coupled with a sensory-rich learning and play environment, are provided to encourage intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth.  We develop within each child a sense of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth through group activities and creative effort.  The children can explore the world around them within appropriate guidelines.  Opportunities for success are ongoing as each child develops a positive self-image, the foundation on which social and academic success is built.

Waikiki Community Center's Preschool is state licensed and nationally accredited, providing quality early education since 1978.
