Why is WCC going through a visioning process?WCC has served the Waikiki community at our current campus since 1978. The campus has not had a major renovation in more than 46 years. In order the meet the growing and changing needs of the community, it was time to look at how to renew the campus to create a more holistic experience of support for Waikiki.
-
What is the future vision for WCC?We envision WCC becoming a modern, dynamic gathering place with comprehensive and complementary services for our keiki, kupuna and the entire community. Elements of our vision include: Flexible, multi-purpose spaces Expanded services/new programs Updated technology infrastructure Greater accessibility Synergy with new affordable housing
-
Why is WCC considering adding affordable housing to its campus? As many of you know through experience, affordable housing is one of the most significant challenges facing our community. We have witnessed firsthand the growing need for housing options, particularly for seniors in our neighborhood. We see this as an opportunity to serve our community more holistically by integrating housing solutions with the services we already provide. It is clear that affordable housing is complimentary to WCC’s vision to serve the Waikiki community.
-
What is the status of the redevelopment plan?We are still in this project's “idea” phase, and no specific plans have been set or confirmed. This is just the beginning of a very long process. It will likely be years before we have a final plan. Even after a plan is finalized, there is a multi-step pre-development process that needs to be completed by multiple parties before any construction can begin.
-
Will WCC continue to operate?Absolutely. We want to assure you that Waikiki Community Center and all of its services will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future. Our commitment to supporting keiki, kupuna, and the greater community remains at the heart of everything we do. We will continue providing essential services and programs as we explore options to modernize and expand our facilities.
-
What’s next?We are in discussions with two state agencies, our landlords and the agency that oversees affordable housing statewide, about how we can thoughtfully update the property. If affordable housing becomes part of our future campus, it will be managed by a development partner, and we will work together to create a cohesive, supportive environment providing an array of holistic services for our kupuna, keiki and community. We’re committed to keeping the community at the center of everything we do and ensuring Waikiki Community Center remains a safe, welcoming, vibrant place for all of us to enjoy.
