To assist members during the stay-at-home period due to COVID-19, the Waikiki Community Center created this Virtual Community Center to provide informative, educational, fun at-home activities and exercise sessions focused on cognitive and physical learning.

This page contains free virtual experiences that you can access from the comfort and safety of your home. Feel free to write to us to suggest other virtual classes or experiences that you'd like to share with our community.

Please consult a physician prior to engaging in any exercise program or class. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy during exercise, STOP immediately.

Should you engage in a virtual fitness class, you acknowledge that you are participating in an activity at your own risk in an unsupervised environment and voluntarily release Waikīkī Community Center, its officers, Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and membership from any responsibility, liabilities, demands or claims of any kind arising out of my participation.

St. Francis "Empower You!"

with Glen Higa

Every Wednesday. Empower You! is a Parkinson-specific exercise class that is designed to keep you moving and doing more of what you want to do! As you practice, you will be challenged physically and cognitively while working on fitness goals: strength, balance, agility, aerobics and flexibility. Exercises improve your fitness, counteract your Parkinson Disease symptoms and increase your daily activity. This whole body, function-focused exercise class will push you to do more than you think is possible in a fun, empowering and enriched environment. Glen Higa is a certified PWR!Moves instructor and personal trainer (NASM-CPT) who was diagnosed in 2018 with Young Onset Parkinson's. He has adopted exercise into his daily life to keep physically and mentally strong. He continues his own training with George Ma of Fitness Therapy Hawaii and trains fellow Parkinson's patients and caregivers as a way to give back to everyone who has helped him along his journey. Classes are online via Zoom.

St. Francis "Zumba Gold"

with Frances Hokama

Every Saturday. Get active with great people at the dance party workout that moves at your own pace. Classes are medium-intensity, low-impact cardio workouts designed for beginners. Move to easy-to-follow Zumba choreography that restores balance, range of motion, and coordination. Dress comfortably and bring a water bottle and small towel. Frances Hokama is a certified Zumba instructor and has been leading Zumba classes with St Francis Senior Community Center since 2019. Classes are online via Zoom.

Tripudio Movement System with Louise Tanswell

Every Thursday. Tripudio which means "to leap or dance with joy " is a gentle but effective movement system that can be done standing or sitting but focuses on the lymphatic & fascial system combined with principles from manual lymphatic drainage. It is gentle so avoiding fatigue and overexertion of the venous system. It is suitable for both men and women of all ages and abilities. The exercises and movements are to music with an emphasis on lymphatic flow, the class is designed for rehabilitation or those wanting a gentle workout. All done standing or seated. Louise Tanswell is a Registered Nurse, Massage Therapist, and Nationally Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She is also the Founder/President of Lymphedema Solutions LLC and Lymphacare Hawaii (501c3). Get Fit for Life with ROBIN

The lifelong fitness instructor first taught aerobics at 17. Now 60, the woman with a passion for “getting older people moving” and helping them find that fountain of youth which is “at the top of a really, really long flight of stairs, and there’s no elevator” has enhanced her repertoire.

If you want a fun, energetic, encouraging, and supportive fitness instructor - Robin is the perfect match! She has taught classes at Waikiki Community Center and is now has several classes via Zoom. Check out her website and list of classes.

AARP Hawaii Webinars Help Kupuna Learn Technology

Kupuna can learn to embrace technology rather than fear it at free webinars offered by AARP Hawai`i and Senior Planet (www.seniorplanet.org) through March 17.

Online classes on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. from Feb. 12 through March 10. Senior Planet, an AARP affiliate, specializes in creating an online community and classes for kupuna and harnessing the power of technology to change the way we age.

The topics cover everything from smart TVs and appliances to Google work tools, cloud computing and virtual payments. You can also check out aarp.org/hi or the AARP Hawai`i Facebook page and click on the Upcoming Events tab to see and register for all the events AARP is offering.
